Paul Hare reports the following method of obtaining the dwgs you have chosen:
The original RAE drawings now held at the Public Records Office (Kew, Richmond, Surry, TW9 4DU) in W London are available for inspection by anyone holding a Reader's Ticket just show some identification and fill in a form) and are kept in a map room on the second floor. The PRO ref category for these dwgs is "AVIA" each dwg having its own individual ref number (ie, dwg # A3856 is AVIA 14/5/3/2).
In fact, the AVIA 14 index is simply a reprint of TECH MEMO 4 with PRO numbers added. If you go to the PRO it takes only a few minutes to look up the ref numbers of the dwgs you want, and in a few minutes the assistant will hand you a folder full of ORIGINAL INK ON LINEN DRAWINGS, many bearing the signatures of people like Geoffrey DeHavilland or H P Folland. You will then be left alone to study them for as long as you like, or until the place closes!
However, if you want to obtain copies it is not quite so simple. Normal dyeline engineering prints are not available. Instead, the PRO offers bromide prints of standard size, regardless of the size of the original, at a cost of E2 for a 16 x l2" copy, and E3 for a 24 x 30". If you can't go yourself, just quote the numbers of the dwgs. you want and they can sort them out for you.
A word of warning for anyone trying to select from the brief description of TECH MEMO 4: when the Royal Aircraft Factory revised a dwg, they gave it a new number rather then a revision suffix, so for a/c in production for any length of time, there often exists nearly identical dwgs with totally different numbers.
